A state trooper was stabbed "multiple" times today by a teen following a half-hour-long pursuit that came to a head in the Western Massachusetts town of New Salem, officials said.

The trooper and the 18-year-old suspect were taken to UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester and are expected to survive, officials said. The DA's office said the trooper is in surgery.

"The Trooper is 47 years old and is assigned to the Athol Barracks. He has been a member of the Massachusetts State Police since 2006. He has a wife and children," state police said today.

"The driver attacked and stabbed (the trooper) and the driver was shot," state police added.

The pursuit started at the Massachusetts/Vermont border and ended on the corner of Fay Road in New Salem.

The trooper had multiple stab wounds to the head and neck and the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the torso, authorities said. The suspect faces multiple charges, including armed assault with intent to murder.

The suspect may have been wanted in connection with a carjacking. Police still do not know what started the pursuit.

Police have not divulged the identities of the two men.

#1 UPDATE: The Trooper who was stabbed today in New Salem is out of surgery and in stable condition at UMass Medical Center. "Out of respect for his family’s privacy, his name is not being released in the immediate future," police said. The suspect who was shot also is out of surgery at UMass and is also in stable condition. His identify is also being withheld.

#2 UPDATE: State police said late this afternoon: "Preliminary investigation has determined that the suspect in this incident was involved in a motor vehicle crash around noon in Walpole NH. In the immediate aftermath of that crash, he allegedly carjacked the vehicle of the other driver involved in the crash, a silver Toyota Camry. He then fled in that vehicle into Vermont and then down Route 91 south in Massachusetts. MSP patrols and local police located him driving the Camry he had carjacked and pursued him, with the pursuit ending at the intersection of Route 202 and Fay Road in New Salem, where the Camry crashed. The suspect’s attack on the Trooper followed that crash.
