A young man has life-threatening injuries after his leg got trapped in a wood chipper while on a landscaping job in South Yarmouth, police say.

Just before 10 a.m. yesterday, the victim was working at a home on Highbank Road in South Yarmouth when he got his leg caught. He lost a portion of his leg in the wood chipper. While he bled profusely, fellow landscaping company employees tried to help him, Yarmouth police said.

The man, who was not identified, was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis by the Yarmouth Fire Department after a tourniquet was applied. A MedFlight helicopter was requested but couldn’t fly due to weather conditions.

The investigation is ongoing. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified, police said.

“Our hopes and prayers are with the injured young man and all those involved with saving his life,” police said in a statement.
