Two pedestrians were struck and killed last night by a Christmas-themed train chugging through Wareham, authorities said,

A preliminary investigation indicates the victims, a man and a woman, were walking on the train tracks when they were struck just before 7:30 p.m., according to Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz's office.

No passengers were injured.

Multiple reports said the train was the scenic "The Polar Express," operated by the Cape Cod Central Railroad and on a special trip for first responders and their families.

Cruz's office said, "The train was a scenic train carrying numerous passengers at the time of impact, and originated in Buzzards Bay."

State police assigned to Cruz's office, Wareham and Transit Police are investigating.
